When was the full moon in the night of New Year’s Eve?

Today is the last day of 2012 and we asked ourselves when there has been or will be a full moon in the past or the future at the turn of the year. What a fascinating picture, if you are imagining also the full moon next to the firework welcoming the New Year. The spectacle of humans meets the eternal beauty of the universe …
In 2009, it was the last time full moon at the turn of the year (meaning New Year’s Eve) in Central Europe: in BERLIN for example, on 31.12.2009 at 08:12:36 pm. Even closer were the people in MOSCOW (full moon on 31.12.2009 at 10:12:36 pm) or on the MALDIVES (full moon on 01.01.2010 at 12:12:36 am).
A similar situation arose in 1990 (full moon in BERLIN on 31.12.1990 at 07:35:12 pm and further east in DELHI only 5 minutes past midnight: 01.01.1991 at 12:05:12 am) and in 1971 (full moon in BERLIN on 31.12.1971 at 09:19:30 pm and close again to midnight in MOSCOW at 11:19:30 pm).
The fact that the full moon shone as well on a New Year’s Eve in 1933 in Germany (in BERLIN on 31.12.1933 at 09:53:54 pm), had surely nothing to do with the sinister events, which were taking place at the time on Earth …
The look ahead into the future is certainly filled with light. We will strike it rich in USA in 2047: next to LOS ANGELES and SAN FRANCISCO, a city that is predistined will have its full moon: LAS VEGAS.

The full moon will take place there on 31.12.2047 at 10:57:12 pm, only just about one hour before the »Happy New Year 2048«. This should be quite a unique spectacle on a most probable cloudless night sky – you should start booking your tickets now 😉
We would like to wish all readers a good start into a new and wonderful 2013. May your dreams come true!
